All from SCTV.  Liberace played by Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin as Ethel Merman, and John Candy as Orson ("I can't work under these conditions") Welles.  

I really miss those goofy all star holiday specials.

A Divine Xmas

We may as well get the season off to a good start.

SCTV had many, many unforgettable, manically funny moments.  One of the most manic and inspired was aired on December 18, 1981.  This was the "SCTV Staff Christmas Party" episode, which included the sketch, "Dusty Towne Sexy Holiday Special".  The superb Catherine O'hara played Dusty Towne, a salty, bawdy dame who specialized in old fashioned cocktail napkin raunchy humor.

 The Dusty Towne character was probably influenced by/based on a number of the old-time, red-hot mamas in show biz -- Sophie Tucker, Totie Fields, Rusty Warren and others.  This album cover gives you an idea of the type of humor they specialized in...

Anyhoo, here is Catherine O'Hara's "Dusty Towne" introducing one of her guest stars, Divine, played by the wonderful John Candy....

And here is the number -- John Candy as Divine doing "Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me"... on ice skates and backed by (I assume) the Juul Haalmeyer Dancers.
